Family History May Add to Alzheimer's Puzzle (HealthDay)

HealthDay - TUESDAY, July 29 (HealthDay News) -- The gene most often associatedwith Alzheimer's disease doesn't provide a complete picture of overallrisk, according to researchers who analyzed family histories of thedisease.

One of the questions I'm often asked about starting a weight gain program concerns the use of protein powders. Beginners often want to know if they really need to purchase protein shakes, especially if they're on a tight budget. The truth is that the supplements can be very helpful in your quest to build muscle, but they're certainly not mandatory.

Protein supplements are just that- they are supplements designed to fill in the gaps in your diet. With that in mind, you should do your best to get most of your calories from whole foods instead of these so called liquid meals. One of the main reasons for this is that whole food has more nutrients such as vitamins and fiber. Your body was designed to eat foods like lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and similar foods. You were not meant to drink shakes all day, so you shouldn't rely on these so much for your muscle gain. Remember that a bunch of powder with artificial ingredients thrown in is not a substitute for a solid, healthy plan.

Does that mean that you should completely disregard protein powders? Of course not. It can be difficult to get enough grams of protein and enough calories in your diet without the supplements. My point is that you should focus on solid foods and not rely so much on the liquid supplements. If you're on a tight budget, you can do without weightlifting supplements all together, or you can even try to make your own homemade protein shakes from scratch. Always give your body the best fuel possible see you can make the most progress possible in your muscle building program.
